Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Sheila Oliver grew up in a resilient community that faced numerous challenges. Despite the obstacles, she excelled academically, graduating from Newark's Weequahic High School. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and later obtained a Master of Science degree in Community Organization and Planning from Columbia University.
Oliver's passion for public service led her to take on various roles, including serving as the executive director of the Essex County Division of Community Action. In this position, she advocated for programs aimed at alleviating poverty and improving the lives of low-income families.
Her political career began to soar in 2003 when she was elected to the General Assembly representing the 34th Legislative District, encompassing parts of Essex and Passaic counties. During her tenure in the Assembly, Oliver made history by becoming the first Black woman to hold the position of Speaker from 2010 to 2014.
As Speaker, Sheila Oliver focused on addressing critical issues such as affordable housing, economic development, and criminal justice reform. Her dedication to improving the lives of New Jersey residents, especially those from marginalized communities, played a pivotal role in passing important legislation.
In 2017, Oliver's achievements continued to make waves as she was chosen as the running mate for Phil Murphy, ultimately leading to their successful election as New Jersey's governor and Lieutenant Governor. Their partnership made history as the first all-female ticket to win a gubernatorial election in the state.
